A reader asks: “How do I look for a good apartment to rent?” “What is your advice for me to find the right apartment for my needs?”

Looking for an apartment is not easy; it takes time and effort. That is why the best time to search for a new apartment is at least 30 days before you move in. This way you can avoid choosing a substandard place just because you have no apartment to live or your lease expires.

Before you start looking for a new apartment, consider the following:

1. Your need for space, e.g. how many bedrooms, parking, lawn.

2. Amenities, e.g. good physical arrangement, toilet and bath, dining and living rooms.

3  Location, e.g. proximity to your workplace, schools, marketplace, hospital.

4. Neighborhood, e.g. quiet, good peace and order, flood-free.

Once you are clear on the above, you can now start your search for the place which can meet your needs. The following are tips on how to look for an apartment.

1. Inform your friends, colleagues, co-workers that you are looking for an apartment and solicit their help. This will give you some good leads and referrals to find the right apartment for you, in the right place.

2. Read the classified ads section in the newspapers for the apartments for rent and select the place that best fit your description.

3. Go online and search the sites that have apartments for lease.

Once you have found the right apartment, either from recommendations from friends and colleagues, or from the classified ads, or from your online search, the rest will be easy.

All it takes is to talk to the owner or manager, inspect the place, make an application, sign lease contract.

Following this guide will help you make the right choices and help you enjoy living at your new apartment.
